What Affects Window and Doors’ Performance
Besides aesthetics, what you equally concern about is performance when buying new or replacement windows and doors. Performance is a hazy and abstract technical term. Most people have no idea about window performance. What exactly we are talking about when we are talking window and doors’ performance? We are mainly talking about the following six aspects: anti-wind pressure performance; energy efficiency; air tightness, water tightness, nature light and soundproof performance, etc.
Anti-wind pressure performance
Anti-wind pressure performance, also related to the safety performance of a window. When you close the window, how much pressure can the windows stand in extreme weathers like fierce wind and stormy rain? The strength of the frame, glass and hardware matter. Most window frame and glass are strong, it’s more about hardware. Doorwin applies European origin brand hardware with multi-point locking system to provide strong support to the sash and lock them tightly to the frame. So that the windows are strong and safe.
Energy efficiency
In hot summers and cold winters, we worry about how much the inside temperatures is affected by outside, that relates to energy efficiency. The ability of heat (or cold) remain and lost will decide how much energy bills you will pay more or save. There are some terms like U value, R value and K value to describe energy efficiency. The lower U value is, the better energy efficiency is. (R value is the mathematical inverse of U value. The R value of 2 is the U value of 0.5. The higher R value is, the better. ) K value is another way to evaluate the energy efficiency. The lower K value is, the better performance is. Both U value and K value are used to describe the ability to conduct heat and cold. U value is American and European way to evaluate energy efficiency while K value is Chinese way.
U value involves with the window frame material and glass specification and sealing. Wood window has a lower U value than aluminum windows. For glass, the glazing pane gets thicker, the lower U value is. With low-E coating, argon gas filled, warm edge spacer, U value gets lower, the energy efficient s better. Quality EPDM sealing makes the windows a good seal.
Air tightness
When it rains, can the rainwater go into your house through the windows? If yes, then your windows don’t have excellent water tightness performance. If not, you are lucky. Weep holes and sealing systems affect the water tightness of a window. Make sure the weep holes are located in the lowest position and sealing is good, so that the rainwater will flow out rather than remain inside the profiles.
Water tightness
When it rains, can the rainwater go into your house through the windows? If yes, then your windows don’t have excellent water tightness performance. If not, you are lucky. Weep holes and sealing systems affect the water tightness of a window. Make sure the weep holes are located in the lowest position and sealing is good, so that the rainwater will flow out rather than remain inside the profiles.
Nature light
Glass makes up about 80% of the window, the rest 20% is made of frame. The percentages of the glass affect the amount of nature light through the windows. With a narrower frame, there will be more nature light is access to the house.
Soundproof performance
If your house is next to a market or street, or you’ve got children and grandparents at home, you might worry about the soundproof ability of windows and doors. How much can you reduce the level of sound after you close the windows? From 0 dB to 65 dB, human can get used to the sound. But when it’s over 85 dB,the sound becomes noise, such as city traffic sound, ambulance siren sound. When a plane is taking off, the sound is up to 140dB, most people are being extremely uncomfortable.
Windows with excellent soundproof performance will reduce the noise to 40 dB or lower, thus people feel comfortable inside when they close windows and doors. The window frame, glazing specification and sealing system will affect how much the soundproof performance of windows.
All the above aspects affect the overall performance of windows and doors. For more performance about windows and doors, contact Doorwin window experts at www.doorwingroup.org.
